An Interview With Cheryl Fonteh, Author of "She Will Rise Again"

August 29, 2017

What inspired you to write this book?

I really enjoy reading mystery and drama fiction novels. Ever since I was a child, I’ve been writing short stories and plays for my own amusement or for my friends. Growing up, I didn’t see many examples of African-American authors, so I didn’t feel it was worthwhile publishing a book. It was after I went to two book signings for African-American authors in 2016 that I felt led to write and publish this book.

What can readers take away from your book?

One of the main things I would like for readers to take away from my book is that you can never be too damaged or broken for God to restore you. I also want my readers to understand that although God can forgive any sin, there are consequences for every action.

What is your writing process like?

The writing process for this book was honestly a lot of fun. I’ve had an outline of this story in my head for over a decade. Sometimes while driving, I would play different scenarios of the story out in my head. Other times, when I had writer’s block, I would simply ask God for guidance about a particular scene, and as I drove, a solution to my problem often came to me.

What was the most exciting thing about this process?

Writing this book was a very exciting process. The most exciting part was putting the finishing touches of the book and designing the book cover. Initially, I had no idea what the title of book should be or what the book cover should look like. I prayed about it, and over the next couple of days, I had this “aha!” moment. After going back and forth with my graphic designer, we were able to come up with a cover that captured exactly what I had in mind for the book cover.

How are you preparing to share this book with readers?

I’m going to have different versions (ebook, hardcover and paperback) of my book available for purchase. I also plan on handing out flyers about the book at several churches, African bookstores, and other local businesses.

What is your favorite quote from this book?

“We can never be too broken for Him to fix and restore us. You may be down now, but I believe if you put your trust in Him, He will make you rise again.”

Would you ever consider writing more books?

I am definitely considering writing more books, maybe a sequel of this one!
